On September 23 and 24, 2023, a spectacular and unmissable event took place in Shanghai’s Pudong District—the 2023 LIFT ON Strongman China Strongest Competition. This world-class competition brought together elite strongman athletes from across the globe for two days of fierce contests and thrilling power displays. Organized by LIFT ON Strongman, the event aimed to ignite passion, promote the sport, and deliver a magnificent display of strength and spirit.

Two legendary strongmen served as head judges at the event: Zydrunas Savickas (Big Z), who holds seven World’s Strongest Man titles and eight Arnold Strongman Classic victories, and Martins Licis, the 2019 World’s Strongest Man, 2021 Rogue Invitational Champion, and 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic winner.

The event was further elevated by the appearance of Lü Xiaojun, an Olympic weightlifting legend with gold medals from the 2012 London, 2016 Rio, and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, along with a 2009 World Championship title. In a heartfelt speech, he shared his hopes for a stronger future for Chinese strongmen.

Another spotlight athlete was Yue Yang, winner of the first National Powerlifting Open, sixth-place finisher in the China Strongman Open, and national bench press record holder. He competed alongside several of his protégés, delivering a captivating and competitive performance.

Over 50 athletes from more than ten countries and regions competed across seven weight classes. Champions in each category earned direct qualification for prestigious international strongman competitions, including the Official Strongman Games and the Arnold Amateur Strongman Series. This event was the only one in China offering such qualification pathways.

It was a historic moment as these athletes became the first in Chinese history to be officially invited to compete in international professional strongman events, symbolizing the emergence of China's presence in the global strongman arena. Their performances laid a solid foundation for the sport’s future in China and served as role models for aspiring athletes nationwide.

The competition also featured several previous champions, including a Czech competitor who broke the deadlift world record with 406 kg and has won the Europe’s Strongest Man title four times, as well as titleholders from Hong Kong and the UAE.

The competition was split over two days and featured seven classic strongman events: Log Press, Carry Medley's, Conventional Deadlift, Sandbag Toss, Monster Dumbbell Press, Distance Carry with the Ding (a traditional Chinese cauldron), and the iconic Atlas Stones. Each event tested the athletes’ strength, endurance, and technique.

The Ding Carry was a standout event, uniquely designed to include Chinese cultural elements. Specially crafted for the competition, it added a distinct national character to the contest.

One of the most memorable moments came when German-Korean athlete Anja Schuffner broke the Asian women's deadlift world record by lifting a stunning 220 kg.

After two days of intense battles, champions in each weight class emerged: Scarlett Harvey from the UK, Wu Qiaojie from China, Anja Schuffner representing Germany and Korea, Xiao Tianyu from China, Ittipol Srimuang from Thailand, Jiri Tkadilcik from the Czech Republic, and Sun Guangying from China.

LIFT ON Strongman has been organizing events since 2020 to promote this niche yet captivating sport. Founders Luo Yahui and Travis Hayes expressed satisfaction with the event’s success, noting that it brought much-needed visibility to strongman sports and laid a solid foundation for future competitions. Travis, himself a professional strongman, achieved outstanding results at the 2022 Official Strongman Games.

Looking ahead, LIFT ON Strongman will host “City Strongest” events across major Chinese cities in 2024. Top athletes from each city event will qualify for the year-end “China’s Strongest” finals. The much-anticipated Shenzhen Strongest Competition in March 2024 promises even more thrilling action and passion.
